14 Jul - MB FABER SECURES MULTI-MILLION POUND AEROSPACE AND NUCLEAR CONTRACTS

MB Faber Ltd, one of the main subsidiaries of the Lanarkshire-based company MB Aerospace Holdings Ltd, has announced details of a contract worth in excess of £1 million which will see it support the development of Europe’s latest military transport aircraft.

The mechanical and electrical engineering design company, which made the announcement ahead of the Farnborough International Airshow, has been appointed by Airbus UK to design and build operational tooling for building wings for the new A400M military transport aircraft at Airbus UK’s Filton plant in Bristol.

The A400M is being developed to a recognised requirement for a new airlifter for European air forces including Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Turkey and the UK, and the total order book currently stands at 192 aircraft.

Established in 1988, MB Faber employs over 100 staff and has a long standing relationship with Airbus.  The company recently secured a contract to develop test equipment that will support the advanced manufacturing techniques required for the new A350 XWB (extra wide-body) passenger aircraft.

In June this year, the company was selected as one of Sellafield Ltd’s preferred suppliers in a deal worth a potential £2 million. MB Faber is one of a small number of mechanical and electrical engineering design companies that have been awarded Sellafield Ltd’s new Task Design House Framework Agreements.

MB Faber will provide specialist services to the nuclear site operating company over the course of the next two years, with an option to extend for up to a further two years.

Derek May, managing director of MB Faber, said: “The Airbus contract is a tremendous achievement for our aerospace team, coming hard on the heals of our recent nuclear industry sales successes. Our engineers have an enviable reputation in the nuclear sector and that was one of the determining factors in ensuring we were awarded a place on Sellafield Ltd’s preferred supplier list.”

Commenting on the Airbus contract, Ian Eaves, general manager of the company’s aerospace division, said:  “Airbus is one of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers and we are very proud of our close association with the company.  To have secured yet another major contract from Airbus is a clear indication that our experience and expertise is well regarded.

“We will design the operational tooling for the structural assembly of the A400M wingbox at our Leyland site and it will then be manufactured on our behalf by our sub-contractors in the UK and Western Europe, before being used in the construction of the wings.”

Graham Wood, chief manufacturing engineer for A400M wing programme, added: “This tooling contract is pivotal to the success of A400M wing production and our supplier selection was based on a detailed understanding and knowledge of wing assembly requirements. We have had a successful relationship with MB Faber for over two decades.”

14 May - MB AEROSPACE APPOINTS NEW GENERAL MANAGER

MB Aerospace is pleased to announce that it has strengthened its team with the appointment of Doug Loudon to the position of General Manager – Supply Chain Integration (Rolls-Royce).

Doug joins the company from Rolls-Royce Plc. where he worked for over 20 years and held a series of senior operational and purchasing roles. His most recent position was Purchase Executive – General Machining at Rolls-Royce's Derby facility, where he had responsibility for a supply chain comprising 70 suppliers.

With a degree in mechanical engineering and management, Doug will take up his new role on 4th August 2008 and will be responsible for MB Aerospace’s current Rolls-Royce programme team in Burnley. He will also be charged with overseeing the expansion of the MB Aerospace team in Derby.

Craig Gallagher, chief executive of MB Aerospace Holdings Ltd, said: "Following our MBO in April last year, we have been working hard on strengthening our management team and I’m delighted that Doug has agreed to join MB Aerospace.

"Along with Boeing, Rolls-Royce Plc. is one of our major clients and having spent over 20 years working with the company, Doug will be a great addition to MB Aerospace. He will play a major role in helping us to better integrate MB Aerospace in Rolls-Royce’s processes, particularly in Derby, where we intend to co-locate certain functions."

Following this appointment Ian Lucarz, who is currently the general manager of MB Aerospace’s Burnley facility, will now be responsible for the supply chain integration and assembly functions on the company’s Boeing programme.

Craig Gallagher added: "Ian has made a significant contribution to the early growth of the Rolls-Royce programme and will continue to support our plans for other aspects of this programme as they develop over the course of the coming 12-18 months."

In June 2007, MB Aerospace Ltd secured two substantial contract extensions from Rolls-Royce Plc., totalling £40 million.

MB Aerospace’s Motherwell site was awarded a three year extension worth £12 million to supply Rolls-Royce Plc. with machined ring components for use in a range of its production-built aero engines.

Meanwhile, the company’s Burnley site was awarded a five year extension worth £28 million to the £25 million contract it secured in 2005, to manage the supply chain for aftermarket engine ring components for gas turbine engines on mature platforms.
